About Guma Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Guma local government is in Benue state, Northcentral Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gbajimba. Guma LGA is bordered by Logo, Makurdi, Tarka, and Doma LGAs. Guma LGA derives its name from the River Guma and is made up of several towns and villages which include Daudu, Torkula, Kase-yough, Gbajimba, Abinsi, Kaambe, Mbasombo, and Ndzorov. The estimated population of Guma LGA is 171,088 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s populace being members of the Tiv ethnic division. The Tiv language is extensively spoken in the area while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF GUMA

Guma LGA covers a total area of 2,882 square kilometres and has the Guma River flowing through its territories. The average temperature of Guma LGA is 29 degrees centigrade while the total precipitation of the area is at an average of 1,850 mm of rainfall per anum. The humidity level of Guma LGA averages 61 percent.


ECONOMY OF GUMA

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Guma LGA with a plethora of crops such as rice, yam, cassava, and maize grown in fairly large quantities within the area. The LGA is also rich in mineral resources such as salt, zinc, and byrite. Guma LGA also hosts several markets such as the Abinsi and Agasha markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities engaged in by the inhabitants of Guma LGA include carpentry and blacksmithing.

HISTORY OF GUMA

Guma local government area was created in May 1989 from the Makurdi LGA.
