A law to establish a University in the Eastern Region of Nigeria was passed on 18 May 1955.[6] While that date marks the formal beginning of the history of the University of Nigeria, the enactment of this legislation by several Nigerian leaders, and inspired particularly by the then Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
