Ibrahim served in Nigeria's parliament representing Minjibir Federal Constituency of Kano. When the military over threw the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari, on December 31st, 1983, he was the first Nigerian to condemn the coup, labelling it a Military junta.

He was at the forefront of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and was also one of the founding fathers of the People's Democratic Party. During Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, he backed Alex Ekwueme who lost to eventual winner Olusegun Obasanjo. Ibhrahim is a civil servant and has also served as President of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA).
