Alloysius Agu Biography / Profile

Alloysius Uzoma Agu was born on July 12th, 1967 in Lagos, Nigeria. Known as Alloy Agu, he is a retired professional footballer who played in the goalkeeping position for NEPA FC, MVV Maastricht, Kayserispor and the Nigerian national team. He is currently a goalkeeper coach for the Nigerian national team.

Alloysius Agu Early Life

Agu started playing for his Primary School in Imo State. Throughout this period he was a field player. However, he was soon converted to a goalkeeper by one of his coaches at school. He moved to Lagos where he also started playing for his Secondary School and got the opportunity to play for Bata which was a team in the Ikeja League. From Bata, he went to Coop United (Cooperative Bank), also in Lagos. While there, he played a game against ITT Waves, who he later joined. From ITT which was Abiola’s company, he was invited by M.K.O. Abiola to Abiola Babes of Abeokuta. He had just finished his secondary school and wanted to stay in Lagos so he opted to sign for NEPA of Lagos.

Alloysius Agu Career

Agu started his career with NEPA FC in 1982. After spending seven years at NEPA, he joined ACB Lagos for a year. In 1990, he joined Dutch club, MVV Maastricht, where he featured 45 times between 1990 and 1992. In 1992, he joined RFC Liège of Belgium and left in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, he played 79 times for Kayserispor of Turkey.

Agu was the number one choice of the Nigerian national team in the early nineties, and played 28 times for the team. He was the starting goalkeeper in the 1990 African Nations Cup where the team the team finished as runners-up and was brought to the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1994 African Nations Cup as a cover for Peter Rufai. Agu retired at the age of 30, after having spent most of his career in Africa. He has served as the goalkeepeing coach for Enyimba and in April 2008 was named goalkeeper coach for the national team.
