Tunde Nightingale

Earnest Olatunde Thomas popularly known as Tunde Nightingale or The Western Nightingale was born on December 10, 1922 in Ibadan. He got the nickname "Nightingale" from his fans because he "sounded", literally, like a nightingale in his smooth, avian-like singing voice and also because he kept a live bird in his home.

Nightingale was a Nigerian singer and guitarist, best known for his unique jùjú music style. He was perhaps the first musician to become a hit performer, playing juju in the post World War II period.His style of music was known as So Wàmbè ("Is it there?"), a reference to the beads worn by women under their clothes to make their dancing more sensuous.

His career started in 1944 when he formed his first group, comprising guitar, tambourine, and shekere and by 1952, his group had expanded to eight members, and had played at the West African Club in Ibadan.

He was signed to TYC label.

He recorded over 40 albums before his death.
