Growing up, Baba Legba was a Christian called Joseph Olatunji before converting to Islam in his midlife in a bid to popularize his music among the Yorubas.

His brand of music was known as "sakara" and was known for using purely Yoruba traditional musical instruments like 'goje' violin, sakara - a small round drum much like tambourine and beaten with a stick.
