Chief Esther Bisoye Tejuoso was born in 1918 in Oke-Ona, Egbaland in Abeokuta, Ogun state, Nigeria. She was the first woman industrialist most prominent businesswoman in Nigeria.

Bisoye Tejuoso Early Life

Born to an Abeokuta Chief and father, Bisoye attended CMS School (now Anglican Primary School, Abeokuta), the Idi-Aba Girls High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State and started trading at the age of 18. 


Bisoye Tejuoso Career

In the early 1950s, the hardworking and vibrant lady relocated to Lagos and became an agent of the UAC and Vono Industry. With time, Bimpe set up her own Teju Industry, a firm specialized in the manufacturing of foam making her the first female industrialist in the country.   

She went on to establish an extensive career as an agent to foreign companies while investing in the plastic-foam industry in 1964 and again in 1972. In 1963, she teamed up with a Norwegian businessman and one Mr. E E Eribo to establish the Nigerian Urethane Company Limited in 1963. She had started with selling little wares. She is remembered as a pioneering woman who attained the summit of financial independence and success. On Saturday January 23rd, 1982, she was installed as the 3rd Iyalode of Egbaland.


Bisoye Tejuoso Personal Life

Chief Bisoye was married to Pa Joseph Somoye who worked as a clerical officer with the Nigeria Railways. Together they had five children with only one (the third child), Oba Dr. Adedapo Tejuosho, surviving. He is the Osile of Oke Ona. 

She was a staunch and very devoted Christian woman who took church activities seriously. She attended the St James African Church, Idi-Ape, Ago Oko, Abeokuta where she became the Iya Ijo (Mother of the Congregation) in 1982.

On September 19th, 1996, during the blood-drenched regime of General Sani Abacha, 10 gunmen stormed the Lagos home of the 3rd Iyalode of Egbaland. Called Dabis Royal Court, her residence was palatial and every inch befitting of an African Queen Mother. As she was saying her good night to all her aides that fateful Wednesday, she was totally unaware that was going to her last night on earth as she was tortured and murdered.
