Chief Usman Mofeyintioluwa Lawal-Osula was born in 1910 in Benin City in present Edo State, Nigeria. He was born into a Benin royal family. Usman was a writer, and businessman with investments in art, real estate and insurance.

During his career, Chief Usman published several books and articles. A memoir of one of his visits to the United Kingdom is placed in a library at McGill University. He was also an international art collector. He sponsored the third floor of the National Museum in Benin City.
Chief Usman Lawal-Osula got married to Lydia Modupe Lawal-Osula on January 26th, 1950. They had four daughters; Chief Dr. Irene Odaro, a retired Solicitor-General and former spouse of Moses Odaro, Hajia Morenike Ibrahim-Yahaya, Princess Iyabo Ifueko Akai and Princess Edugie Nzeribe, the wife of Senator Arthur Nzeribe. He died in Benin City on December 2nd, 1972, a day after his return from London, England where he was receiving treatments.
Usman held a hereditary traditional title as the Arala of Benin.
