Salami Agbaje was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1880 to the family of Mr Durowoju, an Islamic teacher originally from Iseyin in Oyo state and Mrs Sinatu. He was a wealthy businessman and a chief in Ibadan.

Agbaje's father popularly known as Arowodu, was an Arabic migrant from Iseyin. His mother was an Ibadan woman and he had begun his early life as a tailor, apprentice driver and later a sawyer. Agbaje had four other siblings, two boys and two girls. He grew up learning the Koran as he was born into a devote Muslim home.


Salami Agbaje Career

As a sawyer, Agbaje supplied all the timbers (slippers) needed for the Lagos-Ibadan railway, between 1898 and 1901, when fortune smiled on him. Ibadan train station was opened in 1901. His fortune in the timber business encouraged him to venture into the newly, money spinning cocoa market. As a successful businessman, Agbaje rose to become one of the popular chiefs in Ibadan, Oyo state and was eventually made the Balogun of Ibadan.  


Salami Agbaje Personal Life

Salami indulged his income in the education of his children and produced the first Ibadan Medical Doctor- Dr. Saka Anthony Agbaje, Mojeed Agbaje, First Ibadan Lawyer, a retired Supreme Court Judge, Gani Agbaje and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria- Yekeen Agbaje. He died in Ibadan in 1953 leaving behind ten wives and numerous children.
