Victoria Island is a town located within Lagos city in the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Victoria Island is a highbrow area mainly inhabited by the affluent, upper class of Lagos city. Victoria Island is domiciled in the Eti-Osa local government area of the state and consists of popular areas/streets such as Adeola Odeku, Saka Tinubu, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Regency south, Oloba, Tiamuju Savage, Akin Olugbade, Goriola street, Abudu Smith, Adeleke Adedoyin street, Kofo Abayomi street, Akin Adesola street, Adeyemo Alakija street, and Adetokunbo Ademola street. A number of health facilities are found in Victoria Island and these include the Lagoon hospital, Ideal Eagle hospital, Ave Maria hospital, Reddington hospital, Lakeshore cancer center, Faith City hospital, and the Paelon memorial hospital.
Victoria Island has an estimated population of 154,087 inhabitants with Yoruba and English as the commonly spoken languages. Victoria Island is inhabited by both Christian and Muslim faithful. Popular landmarks in Victoria Island include the prestigious Eko hotel and suites, Kuramo Beach, Civic Centre, 235 Restaurant, American Embassy, Silverbird Galleria, Mega Plaza, Ceddi Plaza, and the British Interrnational school. Victoria Island is home to an array of top rank hotels which include the Protea hotel, Intercontinental hotel, Chesney hotel, Blowfish hotel, Radisson Blu Anchorage hotel, Beni Gold hotel, and the Avenue Suites.
Victoria Island falls under the Tropical Savannah climate and is located between Lagos Island and the Lekki peninsula. Victoria island covers a total estimated area of 308 km squared and features two distinct seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons.
Victoria Island has a humidity of 85 percent while the average temperature is 26 degrees centigrade.
Victoria Island is a high brow area and features choice real estate properties making it a hub for real estate management and development. Victoria Island is also home to the headquarters of several banks and financial institutions.
Also, hotels and diplomatic missions as well as consulates of some countries such as Italy, China, and Germany are found within Victoria Island. Trade is also an important feature of the economy of Victoria Island with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Balogun market, and the Fish market.
The area now known as Victoria Island was originally owned by the royal Oniru family whose tenants inhabited the land. The Lagos state government through the Lagos Executive Development Board acquired the land in 1948 with compensation payments made to the displaced inhabitants.
