About Dutse

Dutse is both an LGA and the capital of Jigawa state. Dutse which means rock in Hausa language has a population of about 1,154,853 inhabitants. Islam is the most widely practiced religion while Hausa language is the primary means of communication. Districts and streets that make up Dutse include Galadimawa, Sabuwar Marinjuwa, Fagoji, Kalgo, Sabon gari Zai, GRA, Takur Quarters, Internet area, Ma'ai, Gwari, and Bukka. Tertiary institutions found in Dutse include the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa state Polytechnic, and the National Open University of Nigeria. Hospitals found in Dutse include the Community hospital Dutse, Rasheed Shekoni specialist hospital, Dutse general hospital, Sambo hospital, St Patricks Clinic, and the Federal University Teaching Hospital.  

Popular festivals in Dutse include the Kokawa and Sharo festivals while the important city landmarks include the Royal golf course and resort, Mallaam Aminu triangle, Dutse International Airport, Dutse rock formations, Jigawa state Government Secretariat, Federal High Court Dutse, the palace of the Emir of Dutse and the Dutse Museum. 


GEOGRAPHY

Dutse falls under the semi -arid climate and the topography is undulating characterized by litters of igneous rock, Date trees and hilly walls. The humidity of the city is measured at 40 percent while the average temperature is 34 degrees centigrade.

Dutse has two main seasons with the dry season lasting for much longer while the rains are largely inconsistent and light. 


ECONOMY

Agriculture and commerce form the bedrock of Dutse’s economy. Cattle rearing is also an impoortant feature of Dutse's economic life. Trade is also an important economic activity in Dutse with the city hosting a number of markets such as the Dutse Ultra modern market and the Dutse central market. 

A large number of banks, industries, hotels, as well as government owned establishments are found in Dutse. 


HISTORY

Dutse has been the capital of Jigawa state since the state’s creation in 1991.
