About Ekeremor Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ekeremor local government area is one of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa state, Southsouth Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ekeremor. The LGA shares borders with Delta state and comprises of towns and villages which include Ndoro, Tietiegbene, Ogbobene, Eduwini, Aleibiri, Norhene, Oyiakiri, and Tarakiri. The population of Ekeremor LGA is estimated at 183,085 inhabitants with the prominent tribe n the area being the Ijaw ethnic group. The Ijaw language is widely spoken in the area while Christianity is the commonly practiced religion in the area. A number of festivals are held in Ekeremor LGA and these include the Bini Kaima and the Eremutoru festivals while notable landmarks in the area include the Bayelsa state polytechnic.


GEOGRAPHY OF EKEREMOR

Ekeremor LGA covers a total area of 1810 square kilometres and lies on the Bight of Bonny. The area has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade while the humidity level of the area averages 90 percent. The average wind speed in Ekeremor LGA is 14 km/h.


ECONOMY OF EKEREMOR

Fishing is a key economic feature in Ekeremor LGA with the area’s several rivers and tributaries being rich in sea food. The area is also known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as plantain and sugarcane. Ekeremor LGA is also rich in crude oil and natural gas and the activities of local and international oil mining companies contribute immensely to the economic development of the LGA.
