About Funakaye Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Funakaye local government area is in Gombe state which is in the Northeast geopolitical division of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Bajoga while the area is made up of several towns and villages such as Ashaka, Maraba, Bajoga, Tango, Wawa, and Kupto. Funakaye LGA shares borders with the Gongola River and the Dadin kowa lake. Funakaye LGA is home to the Funakaye Emirate and the LGA boasts an estimated population of 179, 694 inhabitants with the most populous ethnic affiliation in the area being members of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa and Fufulde languages are extensively spoken in the area while Islam is the widely practiced religion in the area. Notable landmarks in Funakaye LGA include the Gombe state polytechnic in Bajoga.


Funakaye LGA sits on an area measuring 1,415 square kilometres and witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the area is put at 33 degrees centigrade while humidity levels in the area average 21 percent.


Farming is a major economic engagement of the people of Funakaye LGA with crops such as sorghum, maize, beans, and millet grown in the area. The LGA has substantially large deposits of minerals such as gypsum, bentonite, and limestone. The area also hosts the Lafarge Africa owned Ashaka cement plant which contributes massively to the economic development of the area.
