Ibi

Ibi local government area is in Taraba state, which is found in the Northcentral geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Ibi LA borders parts of Nasarawa and Plateau states. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Ibi with the area consisting of towns and villages such as Kogwase, Gindin-waya, Moti, Tepga, Sarkin kudu, Dooshima, Dampara, and Mavo. Ibi town was part of the Muri Emirate and has the Sarki Ibi as the predominant traditional ruler of the area. The estimated population of Ibi LGA is 130,055 inhabitants with the area hosting members of several ethnic affiliations such as the Jukun, the Hausa and the Fulani. The Hausa language is commonly spoken in the LGA with Islam as the most practiced religion in the area. Popular festivals held in Ibi LGA include the Nwonyo fishing festival.

GEOGRAPHY OF IBI

Ibi LGA covers a total area of 2,672 square kilometres and lies off the shores of the Benue River. The average temperature of the LGA is 30 degrees centigrade with the area having a number of rivers such as the Shemankar, Donga, and Taraba rivers flowing through its territories. The average humidity level of the area is 51 percent while the total rainfall in the LGA is 1600 mm per annum.

ECONOMY OF IBI

Farming is a major occupation of the people of Ibi LGA with crops such as cotton grown in the area. The area’s inhabitants also engage in fishing with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in seafood. Ibi LGA is also a hub for trade with the area hosting several markets such as the Ibi fish market which attracts thousands of buyers and sellers. Other important economic activities undertaken by the people of Ibi LGA include cattle rearing and the making of fishing nets and canoes.
