Bright Chimezie Ironmuo simply known as Bright Chimezie or Okoro Junior was born on October 1, 1960. He is from Ekeoba, Umuahia in Abia State, Nigeria.

Bright Chimezie Early Life

He grew up reading books by African authors like Chinua Achebe, Cyprain Ekwensi and Elechi Amadi, listening to folk tales by the moon light and going for moon dances and these informed his reverence for the Igbo culture.

After his secondary education in 1979, he moved to Lagos permanently in a bid to commercialize his talent.

Bright Chimezie Career

Bright Chimezie is popular for the infusion of comedy which he used to get his message across into his songs, in a genre he calls Zigima music. His sound is essentially a mix of traditional Nigerian music and igbo highlife fused with chanted vocals.

On getting to Lagos, he played with a lot of bands and in clubs eventually joining the Customs and Excise Dance Band and becoming their assistant band leader and lead vocalist.

In 1984, he released 'Respect Africa' which shot him into the spotlight and on August 17, 1985, Bright Chimezie resigned from the band, forming his own band ‘The Ziggima Movement' and in 1987, released 'Life of Yesterday' returning in 1989 with 'Oyibo Mentality' and then 'Ogbono Soup' in 1990 which was a chart buster. 'Life na teacher' in 1995 and then 'Prophet Chukwuma – my experience' in 2001.

He left the music scene from 2003 to 2009 to spend some time with his children and infuse them with the Igbo culture.

He performed live on stage with Humblesmith who describes him as his mentor in the 2016 Star Music Trek Concert.
