Aliko Dangote was born on April 10th, 1957 in his hometown of Kano in Kano state, Nigeria. He is a business mogul, investor and founder and CEO of the Dangote Group. He is considered one of the richest men in Africa.

Dangote was born into a wealthy Muslim family from the Hausa tribe. His great grandfather, Alhaji Alhassan Dantata, until his death the richest man in Africa. Aliko was brought up with an Islamic education as he attended the Sheikh Ali Kumasi Madrasa. Later on, he had his secondary education at Capital High School, Kano. He thereafter, proceeded to Al-Azhar University in Cairo in Egypt where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in business studies and administration.

In 1977 when Aliko was just 21, he established the Dangote Group as a mini trading business with the aid of a #500,000 he received from his wealthy uncle, Sanusi Abdulkadir Dantata. he company is at present a conglomerate worth multi-trillions of naira with branches in countries like Togo, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Ghana, Zambia, and South Africa and with Headquarters in Nigeria.

The group has stretched out from just trading to becoming the largest industrial group in Nigeria including Dangote Sugar Refinery, Dangote Cement, and Dangote Flour. Dangote rented an abandoned piece of land at Apapa Port from the Nigerian Ports Authorities and proceeded to build facilities for his flour company there. He also went on to approach the Central Bank of Nigeria with a proposal for them to give him the contract of managing their fleet of staff buses; they approved his proposal.

Working hard, he rose from a petty trade business man in Nigeria to become a business tycoon across the world. His major investments include flour, cement and sugar. Recently however, Dangote has moved into the Nigerian oil sector. He hinted in April 2014 of his intention to invest $9 billion in building a Private Oil refinery, a petrochemical plant and fertilizer processing Complex.

Dangote Group is also into the exportation of cocoa, Ginger, cashew nut, cotton, sesame seed to many Nations around the Globe. The Dangote Transport got the license of Central Bank of Nigeria in 1990 to manage its fleet of buses. He is also a major employer of labour in Nigeria and among top employers in West Africa, with a total workforce of about 11,000 workers. He is also a major financier in Transport business in Nigeria, textile industry and housing sector. 

In 2014, Forbes magazine rated Alhaji Dangote's net worth at $24.6 billion. Also in 2014, he donated the sum of 150 million naira (US$750,000) to fight the spread of the Ebola virus. In 2015, he expressed interest in purchasing the English football team Arsenal.

Dangote has been married four times, three of which ended in divorce. His children include; Zainab Dangote, Halima Dangote, Fatima Dangote and Salma Dangote. In July 2018, he revealed his desire to marry a new wife. According to him, “I am not getting younger. 60 years is no joke. But it doesn’t make sense to go out and get somebody if you don’t have the time." But he agrees that he needs to “calm down a bit,” adding that daily he takes over 100 calls. His brother, Sani Dangote, serves as Group Vice President at Dangote Industries Limited.
