Mahmud Dantata was born in 1922 in the Sareri quarters of Kano State, Nigeria. His father, Alhaji Dantata was a business mogul from Bebeji, Kano State. Mahmud was a Nigerian businessmen and politician.

Mahmud grew up in Kano where attended Islamic and primary schools. He thereafter enrolled at Achimota College, in Ghana where he completed his formal education.


Mahmud Dantata Career

Upon his return from Ghana in 1945, Mahmud joined his father’s business where he served as his Chief Scribe. He thereafter began his own business and invested in sugar mill industries, petrol stations and hotels. He was founder of the West African Pilgrims Association (WAPA) and a currency trader. He was charged with illegal currency printing in 1957. He was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment.

Popularly known as Mamuda Wapa, he was a member of Northern People's Congress (NPC). He represented Kano West in the Federal House of Representatives from 1965 to 1966.

Mahmud was married and had several wives. He died in 1983.
