Olateju Oyeleye was born on April 7th, 1924 in Ilesha, Osun State, Nigeria to Pa Joseph Oyeleye Aare (a farmer) and Madam Felicia Esan Oyeleye (a trader). He was an engineer and pioneer of television broadcasting and management in Nigeria and co-founder of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

Olateju Oyeleye Early Life

Olateju was born in a devote Christian home and got baptized at the age of 2 confirmed at 18 by Archbishop L.G. Vining. He was a Christian for the rest of his life. He attended St Peter's Anglican School, Isona, Ilesha from 1932-1934 and Ilesa Grammar School from 1935-1942. He thereafter, proceeded to the University of London where obtained a first degree in Electrical Engineering in 1957.


Olateju Oyeleye Career

After graduating, Oyeleye worked with Ferguson Radio Corporation, Engield Middlesex between 1957 and 1959. He returned to Nigeria in 1959 and joined the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation where he rose to the position of the General Manager of the Western Nigerian Television- Western Nigeria Broadcasting Services (WNTV-WNBS), the first television station in Africa. During his tenure, the coverage of the station was significantly expanded. 

He left the broadcasting sector in 1973 and moved to Total Nigeria Plc as the General Manager, from where he rose to the position of Group Executive Director. At Total Nigeria, he oversaw the activities of the main company and developed several of its subsidiaries such as Nigerian Gas Cylinder Manufacturing Company, Ibadan. Total Industries Ltd. Koko; Total Agrik Ltd., Olokoto (now Yakoyo Agrik Ltd.) and Rhone-Total Nigeria Ltd.

After Total, Engr. Oyeleye founded Engineering and Management Consulting firm, and Yakooyo Agrik Farms in 1992. He was a Fellow and one time President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, a Fellow of the institute of Petroleum, London and a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers of UK. He was also a Fellow and past President of the Nigerian Institute of Management and a foundation Fellow of the Academy. He was a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in London.


Olateju Oyeleye Personal Life

Engr. Teju was married twice, first in 1956 in London, England to Anne Awujoola Oyeleye. Anne was a registered nurse and together they had three children - Dr. Layi Oyeleye, Dr. Gunju Oyeleye and Dr. Biola Oyeleye. She died in a car accident in March 1978. After her death, he got married again to Comfort Olubunmi Awolowo in 1979. He had three children with Mrs. Comfort, an accountant. They include Mr. Tolu Oyeleye, Dr. Mrs. Kike Olaniyan and Mr. Fola Oyeleye. 

Engr. Teju died in 2013 at the age of 89.

Teju received an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) from the Nigerian government in December 2003.
