About Onicha Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Onicha local government area is situated in Ebonyi state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Isu. Towns and villages that make up Onicha LGA include Ezekporoke, Obeagu, Anike, Isu, Mgbaneze, Mgbana ukwu, Agbabor, Ukawu, and Oshiri. The current estimated population of Onicha LGA is put at 132,071 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the LGA. A number of festivals are held in Onicha LGA and these include the Oke Aku festival while the notable landmarks in the LGA include the Community Secondary School Agunkwo.


GEOGRAPHY OF ONICHA

Onicha LGA has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade with an average wind speed of 11 km/h. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the rainy season which falls between the months of March to September and the dry season which comes between the months of October and Febuary.


ECONOMY OF ONICHA

Onicha LGA has a very rich agricultural heritage with crops such as rice, yam, cassava, and maize grown in large quantities within the area. The LGA also has a boisterous trade sector with the area hosting several markets which include the Abaomege Central Market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. The people of Onicha LGA also engage in enterprises such as hunting and crafts making.
