Aloysious Ikem Atuegbu was one of Nigeria’s greatest all time footballers. Nicknamed Blockbuster for his ferocious shots, Aloy was born on April 29, 1953 in Jos. He played for Mighty Jets of Jos, but made his name while playing for Enugu Rangers International.

Aloysius Atuegbu Career

Atuegbu began his illustrous career playing for Mighty Jets of Jos. In 1976, he left Jos and joined Enugu Rangers. He won numerous trophies with Rangers, inluding the coveted Challenge Cup (now FA Cup), and was a huge success story in the Coal City club. He also played for Kaduna based club, Ranchers Bees. He was a stalwart on the Super Eagles offense from 1975 until 1981, winning 60 caps. During his time, he was part of the 1980 African Nations Cup winning Green Eagles team.

He was at a time a member of the coaching staff of Rangers International FC of Enugu after he retired from active football. Soon after his retirement, the Nigeria Football Association employed him as one of the assistant coaches to the national Under-17 and Under-23 soccer teams. His last job was serving as coach to one of the football teams in Keffi, Nasarawa State.


Aloysius Atuegbu Personal Life

Atuegbu had three other brothers; Matthew, Andrew, Nicholas, who were also footballers. He died on May 25th 2008. He was survived by his wife, Gloria, and three children.
