Lekan Salami

Olalekan Sanusi Salami was born in 1928 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria to Mr. Salami and Mrs. Oyebimpe Oyetunde. He was a Nigerian businessman, politician and football administrator known for his role in the successful years of Ibadan based Shooting Stars Football Club.

Lekan Salami Early Life

Salami was born into a royal family in Eleta neighborhood of Ibadan South East local government area. His uncle, the late Shittu Akintola Oyetunde, was the Olubadan during his life time. Salami grew up learning the Quran as his family were devote Muslims. He also attended Ibadan Boys High School and Lisabi Grammar School in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Lekan Salami Career

Lekan was a politician. He served as secretary of the Ibadan Cooperative Produce Marketing Union in the early 1950s. He also served as councilor to the Ibadan District Council after he won an election in 1954 until 1956 when he won the election into the Western House of Assembly. He won a reelection into the Ibadan District Council in 1961 and served five months in detention following a military coup in January 1966. He also owned a textile mill in Lagos and was a director of Solel Boneh.

Chief Salami ventured into sports administration in 1955 at the age of 27 while he was an executive director at Western Nigeria Development Corporation (WNDC). He was best known as a passionate patron of Shooting Stars, a club he nurtured from infancy to maturity and rising to become the first Nigerian team to win a trophy in 1996.  He raised the club from the defunct Pepsi Cola FC, which was a subsidiary of the then Western Nigeria Development Corporation (WNDC) which is today’s Oodua Investment. 

Lekan Salami Personal Life

Chief Salami was married to an Ekiti woman, Mrs. Ayodele Salami and they were blessed with children. He lost a daughter in 1959 and a son in 1976. His last child, Adenrele Lekan-Salami, is the founder of Adenrele Lekan-Salami Foundation and he aims to become the Olubadan of Ibadan Land.

Lekan's interest and influence in football endured for nearly four decades until his death in march 1988 on a Sunday he was to host a crucial meeting on his pet club, the then IICC Shooting Stars at his palatial house at Eleta, in Ibadan.

The Adamasingba Sports Complex inaugurated on May 28th, 1988, two months after his tragic death, was renamed after him as Lekan Salami Stadium.
