Ibikunle Amosun Early Life

He attended African Church Primary School, Abeokuta (1965 – 1970) and African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta (1971 – 1977). He had his tertiary education in Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), Abeokuta (1979 – 1983), graduating with an HND (Higher National Diploma) in Accounting. In the year 2000, he acquired a Masters of Art degree in International Finance from the University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom.


Ibikunle Amosun Career

Senator Amosun, a Chartered Accountant, commenced his accounting career in 1984 as an Audit Trainee with Messrs J.A.A. Adeniyi & Co. (Chartered Accountants). He later joined Lanre Aremu & Co. (Chartered Accountants), where he rose to become a manager in 1989 in Lagos state. He also worked under XtraEdge Consulting as a senior consultant.

In 1990, he became an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). In the same year, he established the highly successful Accounting Firm of Ibikunle Amosun & Co. (Chartered Accountants) in which he was a principal partner. In 2003, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FICA) and the Institute of Taxation (FITN).

He was elected into the Senate, the upper chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly, in April, 2003, representing Ogun Central Senatorial District. While in the Senate between 2003 and 2007, he served as Chairman, Senate Committee on Commerce; Member, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs; Member, Senate Committee on Appropriation; Member, Senate Committee on Privatization and Member, Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence.

Amosun was an unsuccessful candidate for the Governorship of Ogun State in April 2007, running on the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) platform, but was defeated by Gbenga Daniel. He disputed the result, but in August 2009 the Ogun State Election Petitions Tribunal dismissed the petition.

He was the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), now All Progressive Congress (APC) for the April 2011 Ogun State gubernatorial election, which he won. He was sworn-in on May 29, 2011. He is the fourth governor of Ogun state.

During the 2015 elections, Amosun successfully ran for re-election on the platform of APC  again and was sworn in on May 29, 2015, thereby kickstarting his second term in office.

 


Ibikunle Amosun Personal Life

Senator Amosun is married to Mrs. Olufunso Amosun and the blissful union has produced five lovely children.

Senator Amosun believes in  social development through philanthropy. He instituted a scholarship scheme in 1986,  several years before venturing into politics, which he later institutionalized by setting up the Senator Ibikunle Amosun Scholarship Foundation (SIASF) on Thursday, 7 July 2005. He has awarded scholarships to over 1,000 students of Ogun State origin, in various institutions of higher learning.  

He instituted various other subsisting empowerment initiatives for trade groups, artisans, communities, women and other vulnerable groups in the society.

His Alma Maters – African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta and Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), also in Abeokuta – have benefited from his generous disposition to give back to the society. He built and commissioned the Administrative Block at African Church Grammar School, among other similar gestures.

He has been recognized for his contributions to the development of Ogun state. Some of the awards he has received are:

  • Investment Development Icon Award for 2013 by African Leadership Magazine in New York (September 2013). 
  • Best Security Conscious State Governor in West Africa by Security Watch Africa, in Accra, Ghana (October 2012) 
  • Good Governance Award: Governor of the Fastest Growing State Economy by Business day Newspaper in Lagos (November 2013).

He was recognised with the National Honour Award: Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan – September 2014
