Turaki attended Federal Government College Kaduna for his secondary school and Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned a degree in Actuarial Science in the year 1985.

Ibrahim Samiru Turaki Career

Turaki was elected governor of Jigawa State in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 on the platform of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP). He wasnotable for decentralizing the Jigawa state government, by creating what is today known as as the Hadejia Emirate, Dutse, Gumel, Ringim and Kazaure.

In April 2007, Turaki contested for the Senate as a member of PDP and was elected to represent Jigawa Northwest Federal Constituency. At the senate, he became a member of the committee on Upstream Petroleum Resources, Sports, Marina, National Planning and National Identity Card and Population. In the 2011, he wanted to run for re-election, but the Peoples Democratic Party favored Danladi Abdullahi Sankara. This development caused him to defect to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). At the end of the election, Danladi emerged the winner of the election, but Turaki said that there had been electoral fraud.

In July 2017, Turaki was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He had been on the wanted list of the EFCC since May 3rd, 2013 when a Federal High Court in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, issued the warrant for his arrest for serially failing to appear before the court. The arrest order was as a result of Turaki’s repeated refusal to appear before the court to answer charges of massive looting of his state made against him by the EFCC. He was first arraigned by the EFCC before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on July 13th, 2007 on a 32-count charge of misappropriating N36 billion while in office. He was remanded at the Kuje Prison Abuja for more than a week.
