Toke Makinwa Early Life

Toke was born in Onikan`s St. Nicholas Hospital as the second child of her parent's four children including Busayo Makinwa and Ope Makinwa. She grew up outside Lagos but had to move to Lagos when her parents died and was raised by foster parents, Mr. and Mrs.Akinyelure. Toke had her secondary education at Federal Government College of Oyo State. She graduated from the University of Lagos where she majored in English Language and Literature.

Makinwa`s first job was at Zenith Bank. It was obvious that her parents could have been very glad that she chose this path. After a while, she decided to take a chance and move to the industry of mass media. It was her dream to become a media person! Toke Makinwa did not want to give up so easily. She started her On-Air career in 1999 at Cool FM. Still, this was not her initial success. In 2010, she was the co-host of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant. She became popular after “Rhythms of the Night” at the Rhythm 93.7 FM.

After her initial success on Radio and the Internet, Toke co-starred as a host of 3LiveChick with Oreka Godis and Tosyn Bucknor. This show was extended to terrestrial TV stations in 2012. A lot of Nigerian celebrities starred in that show such as Bez, Tonto Dikeh, and Tiwa Savage. Toke's pictures were on the covers of “Mode Men” and “EM.” Still, she refused to return for season 2 of the show. 

She became a star of the show called Trending on HipTV in 2014. This news was first confirmed and publicized in Hip Hop World Magazine. During her time on the show, she was able to interview such major Nigerian celebrities like Chidinma, OC Ukeje, Femi Kuti, Eva Alordiah and Chiwetel Ejiofor. In 2014, she was featured in Moments with Mo. She was filmed in several episodes of this show on EbonyLife TV. She left the show in February 2018. She is currently the co-host of 93.7 Rhythm FM Radio Show “The Morning Drive.” Her vlog called, Toke Moments, is also one of the most popular in Nigeria.

Toke has written a book about her life which is titled “On Becoming.” It`s her autobiography. She signed several endorsement contracts with Mecran Cosmetics, Nestle Nigeria, and the United Africa Company. The last contract earned her millions of Naira.

On January 15th, 2014, Toke got married to Maje Ayida in a private ceremony. However, the couple separated in 2015 after it was disclosed that Maje Ayida impregnated his ex-girlfriend. On October 5th, 2017, the marriage was dissolved by an Igbosere High Court in Lagos on the grounds that Ayida committed adultery. Her net worth is about $2 million which makes her one of the richest radio hosts in Nigeria.
