Birnin Kebbi is the largest city in Kebbi state and also the state’s capital. It is also the headquarter of the Gwandu emirate. It is home to several tribes which include the Hausa and Fulani. Birnin Kebbi has an estimated population of 986, 259 inhabitants. The most widely spoken language in the city is Hausa while Islam is the most practiced religion. Populardistricts/ streets in Birnin Kebbi include Abdullahi Fodio Road, Ninoma street, Premier road, Rafin Atiku, Makera Gandu, Prison service, Gesse Low cost, Gwadangwaji, Nassarawa, Zaria bye pass, and Majidadi road. Tertiary institutions found in Birnin Kebbi include the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, College of Basic and Advanced studies, and the Waziri Umaru federal polytechnic.  

Popular festivals held in Birnin Kebbi include the Argungu fishing festival and the Zuru Uhola festival while important places to visit in the city are the Kanta Museum, Kebbi state Government Secretariat, Emir's Palace and the Federal University Birnin Kebbi. A number of health facilities exist within Birnin kebbi and these include the Federal Medical center, DDG Medical Center, Godiya hospital, Sir Yahaya memorial hospital, and the Al-Istijabah hospital.


GEOGRAPHY

Birnin Kebbi has a semi-arid climate and has a total area of 7,624 km squared. There are two major seasons in Birnin  Kebbi; the dry and the rainy with the dry season extending for longer periods. The town's average temperature is 34 degrees centigrade with humidity pegged at 39 percent.


ECONOMY

Agriculture and commerce are the main economic activities of the inhabitants of Birnin-kebbi. The city has a number of important markets that attract thousands of buyers and sellers of diverse commodities and these include the Birnin kebbi central market and the Karan market.

Birnin kebbi being a cosmopolitan city also hosts several hotels, banks, industries, privately owned establishments as well as government owned institutions which contribute immensely to the economy of the city.


HISTORY

Birnin Kebbi is the former headquarter of the Kebbi Emirate and was made capital of Kebbi state in 1991 after the state's creation in 1991.
