Also referred to as Ohugbo, Afikpo is a prominent town found in Ebonyi state of the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Afikpo is home to several ethnic groups with the majority of the population being members of the Igbo tribe. Tertiary institutions found in Afikpo include the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic and the Mater Misericordia School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Popular districts in Afikpo include Unwana, Amasiri, Amaekwu, Amangwu, Ubam, Ngodo, Kpogirikpo, Ohaisu, Evuma, Egeburu, Mgbom, Amauzu, Amaobolobo, Enohia Ntalu, and Ozizza. Afikpo has an estimated population of 454, 178 inhabitants and Igbo and English are the widely spoken languages. The people of Afikpo are predominantly Christians with a sizeable percentage of the population practicing the traditional religion. Popular festivals celebrated in Afikpo include the Ikeji festival and the Ebu Mbe festival. Notable landmarks in Afikpo include the Ndibe sand beach, Ozizza sand beach, Unwana sand beach, and the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp. Health facilities found in Afikpo include the Mater Miericordiae hospital, Afikpo medical center, His Grace hospital, Owutu Edda General Hospital, and the Eja memorial hospital.


GEOGRAPHY

The town of Afikpo has a total area measuring 164km squared at an elevation of about 350 feet. The town of Afikpo falls under the Tropical Savannah climate and has a humidity of 91 percent.

The average temperature in Afikpo is 28 degrees centigrade with annual precipitation pegged at about 2300 mm of rainfall.


ECONOMY

Afikpo is a town that has a rich Agricultural heritage. A range of crops are cultivated in large quantities and these include rice, cassava, yam, and pumpkins. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with markets such as the Eke Market, Ahia Okpu Ugwueguelu, and the Orie market Ohaisu Afikpo.

Also, Afikpo has reasonably large deposits of salt in some of the water bodies that are found within its territory.


HISTORY

Afikpo civilization is believed to date back to the Neolithic age and this historical assumption is supported by archaeological findings of centuries-old ceremonial masks found within the town’s territory.
