About Owan East Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Owan East local government area is in Edo state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria with headquarters in the town of Afize. Owan East LGA is bordered by Akoko Edo, Etsako west, Owan west, Esan Central, and Uhunmwonde LGAs. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages which include Igue, Ihievbe, Ikao, Ive Ada Obi, Ilokha, Otuo, and Emai. The estimated population of Owan East LGA is put at 291,084 inhabitants with the area mostly inhabited by members of the Owan and Afemai ethnic affiliations. The Owan language is commonly spoken in the Owan East LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area. Popular festivals celebrated in Owan East LGA include the Ugongon festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF OWAN EAST

Owan East LGA covers a total area of 1,240 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The LGA experiences two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the dry seasons usually falling between the months of October to March while the rainy seasons usually fall between the months of April to September.


ECONOMY OF OWAN EAST

Owan East LGA is a hub for the preparation of traditional medicine with the area renowned for the preparation of medicinal roots and herbs. Farming is also an important economic activity in Owan East LGA with crops such as cassava, maize, yam and plantains grown in the area. Other important economic activities in Owan East LGA include animal rearing, food processing, and wood carving.
