About Gbonyin Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Gbonyin local government area which is also referred to as Aiyekire LGA is in Ekiti state, Southwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ode-Ekiti.  A number of towns and villages make up Gbonyin LGA and these include Iluomoba, Aisegba, Agbado, Iro, Ugboeku, Aba ika, Oguniyi, Sakunmi, and Olorunda. The estimated population of Gbonyin LGA is 145,713 inhabitants with the most populous tribe being the Yoruba. Gbonyin LGA shares borders with Ise/Emure, Ekiti East, Ikole, Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ado Ekiti and Akoko Northwest local government areas. The widely spoken languages in Gbonyin LGA include the Yoruba and English languages while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practised religions in the area. Notable landmarks in Gbonyin LGA include the Ose/Ogbe dam, and the General hospital in Ijan-ekiti.


GEOGRAPHY OF GBONYIN

Gbonyin LGA covers a total area of 391 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The total precipitation of the area is estimated at 1950 mm of rainfall per annum. The average wind speed in Gbonyin LGA is 11 km/h while the average humidity level in the area is 60 percent.


ECONOMY OF GBONYIN

A number of crops such as oil palm, cassava, and rice are grown in Gbonyin LGA. The area also hosts several industries, hotels, banks and educational institutions. Trade also blossoms in the area with the LGA hosting several markets where a plethora of commodities are bought and sold.

Gbonyin local government area was created on the 1st day of October 1996.
