About Oye Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Oye local government area is domiciled in Ekiti state, South-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA residing in the town of Oye. Oye LGA is bordered by the Ilejemeje, Irepodun Ifelodun, Ikole and Ido Osi LGAs. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages which include Oye, Ibaji, Ijelu, Oloje, Omu, Imojo, Ayegbaju, and Ire. The estimated population of Oye LGA is put at 189,722 inhabitants with the area’s populace madely comprising of members of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are commonly practiced in the area. Prominent traditional rulers in Oye LGA include the Obaloja of Oloje and the Oloye of Oye.


GEOGRAPHY OF OYE

Oye LGA has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade with the area witnessing two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The LGA has an average humidity level of 58 percent while the total precipitation in the LGA is estimated at 1600 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF OYE

Trade is an important economic activity in Oye LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Menara market where a plethora of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities undertaken by the dwellers of Oye LGA include farming, food processing, crafts making, textile weaving, and wood carving.

HISTORY OF OYE

Oye LGA was created on the 17th of May 1989 from the old Ekiti North LGA.
