Daniel Akpeyi was born on August 3rd, 1986 in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. He is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for South African side, Chippa United, and the Nigerian national team. His mother, Madam Caroline  Akpeyi, died at the age of 57 after a brief illness.

Akpeyi grew up in Nnewi where he attended Primary and Secondary schools. He joined the Gabros International F.C. academy two and got promoted to the first team in 2005.


Daniel Akpeyi Career

After two years with the senior team of Gabros, Akpeyi he moved to Nasarawa United in July 1, 2007. On July 1, 2009, Akpeyi was transferred to FC Heartland. He has played until 2014 for the club, winning the Federation Cup twice with the team in 2011 and 2012. In February 2014, it was announced that he had left Heartland to join league rivals Warri Wolves, but a few days later, Heartland denied the move through an official statement, stating that they had no intention to sell their first choice goalkeeper. However, in March 2014, he secured his move to Warri Wolves FC from FC Heartland for an undisclosed amount. He played for the club until 2015.

On July 15, 2015, Akpeyi signed a two-year deal with Chippa United while his market value was estimated at £225,000. Akpeyi is the agent of Myron Top class Sports Outfits. At the age of 28, Akpeyi earned his first international cap with the Nigerian National team under the coach Stephen Keshi against South Africa replacing Vincent Enyeama. He saved a penalty and described as Man of the Match for his performance.

Akpeyi was called of the Nigeria National U-20 football team and U-23 team. He was the member of the youth team at 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, 2008 Summer Olympics as well as 2014 African Nations Championship.  On 6 May 2014 Akpeyi was named in the 30-man provisional squad ahead of 2014 FIFA World Cup. He made his first full cap in 2015, called in for the friendly vs. South Africa as a replacement for an injured Vincent Enyeama. He saved a penalty and was lauded for his strong keeping in his Man of the Match performance.  In 2016, he won the bronze medal with the Dream Team at the Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Akpeyi got married to his girlfriend, Ebert-Kalu Emmanuella on December 2016 in a quiet ceremony in Lagos which was attended by his teammates and close friends. The couple had earlier in December 2016 held an elaborate traditional wedding ceremony in Abia State.

Akpeyi's current market value is estimated at £495 thousand. He received N350,000 as camp allowances in a 2018 FIFA World Cup after Nigerian beat Algeria with 3-1. As of 2018, Akpeyi earns around R44,000 in a month from his current club.
