About Buruku Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Buruku local government area is found in Benue State, Northcentral Nigeria. The headquarters of the area are situated in the town of Buruku and the LGA consists of several towns and villages which include Etulo, Mbaakura, Tyowanye, Abira, Mbalagh, Mbaya, Binev, and Shorov. Buruku LGA is bordered by the Katsina-Ala, Ushongo, Guma,and Gboko LGAs and consists of several tribal affiliations with the most prominent being the Tiv, the Etulo, and the Nyifon tribal divisions. Christianity and Islam are the most practiced religions while the Tiv language is widely spoken within the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF BURUKU

Buruku local government area covers a total area of 1,246 square kilometres and features a number of rivers such as the River Buruku and the River Ambighir. The average temperature in Buruku LGA is 28 degrees centigrade while the landscape of the area features swampy areas and thichk forests. The humidity level of Buruku LGA averages 68 percent while the area witnesses two major seasons; the dry and the rainy seasons.


ECONOMY OF BURUKU

Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of Buruku local government area with an abundance of a variety of crops grown in the area. These crops include Yam, rice, beans, cassava, soyabeans and melon. The LGA is also rich in minerals which include limestone, coal, and gravel. Trade also blossoms in Buruku LGA with the area being home to several markets such as the Tyowanye, Ugbema, and Anvambe markets .

HISTORY OF BURUKU

Buruku local government area was created in the year 1989 from Gboko LGA.
