About Ohimini Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ohimini local government area is domiciled in Benue state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Idekpa-Okikpo. The LGA shares boundaries with the Otukpo and Okpokwu LGAs and with parts of Kogi state. Towns and villages that make up Ohimini LGA include Onyagede, Enumona, Ipolabakpa, Iyaya, Okpiko, Idekpa, Awume, and Ogoli. The current estimated population of Ohimini LGA is put at 181,629 inhabitants with the area majorly occupied by members of the Idoma ethnic group. The Idoma language is extensively spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF OHIMINI

Ohimini LGA occupies a total area of 632 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The Ohimini River from which the LGA derives its name flows through the area. Ohimini LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with average humidity level in the area put at 52 percent.


ECONOMY OF OHIMINI

A number of mineral resources are found are in Ohimini LGA and these include bauxite, coal, and bentonite. Farming is the major source of livelihood for the people of Ohimini LGA with crops such as maize, yam, rice, vegetables, and a variety of fruits grown in large quantities within the area. Trade also blossoms in Ohimini LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Onyagede market which attracts hundreds of buyers and sellers. Other enterprises engaged in by the people of Ohimini LGA include food processing, hunting, and animal rearing.

HISTORY OF OHIMINI

Ohimini LGA was created in the year 1996 from the Otukpo LGA.
