Gboko

Gboko local government area is in Benue state, Northcentral Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gboko. The LGA shares borders with Tarka, Ushongo, Buruku, Gwer, and Konshisha LGAs. A number of towns and villages make up Gboko LGA and these include Mbatan, Mbakpegh, Ukpekpe, Mbaaverakaa, Mbadim, Mbaanku, and Igyorov. The Tor Tiv is the traditional administrator of the area. The estimated population of Gboko local government area is 171,284 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Tiv ethnic group. The widely spoken languages in Gboko LGA include Tiv and Hausa while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practiced religions in the area. Popular festivals held in Gboko LGA include the Kwag-hir festival while notable landmarks in the area include the Dangote Cement plant and the Gboko polytechnic.

GEOGRAPHY OF GBOKO

Gboko LGA occupies a total area of 2,264 square kilometres and falls within the Savannah region. The LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the area is 28 degrees centigrade while the humidity level of the LGA averages 49 percent.

ECONOMY OF GBOKO

Gboko LGA is rich in mineral deposits of limestone, granite, Barite, and alluvia clay. Farming is the major occupation of the people of Gboko LGA with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as rice, yam, maize and cassava in substantially large quantities. Trade also blossoms in Gboko LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Ortese, Ikpa, and Tarukpe markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold by the area’s inhabitants.
