Gershom Bassey Early Life

Bassey completed his secondary education at Federal Government College Sokoto in 1977 obtaining his WASC, after which he proceeded to Greylands College Isle of Wight UK, where he obtained his A-Level results in 1979. Bassey got admission to Manchester University UK where he studied Production Engineering and Economics, graduating in 1984. He also completed a Masters programme in Construction Management at Brunnel Universty UK in 1986.

Gershom Bassey Career

Before taking up his senatorial mantle, Senator Bassey, was the Chairman of the Cross River State Water Board. He was also the Chairman of the Strategic Policy Committee in the State.

In 2015, Bassey ran for the senate senate of Cross River South Senatorial District on the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) platform. He defeated incumbent senator, Bassey Otu, to pick the party’s ticket for Cross River South Senatorial District and thereafter went ahead to win the senatorial seat. Meanwhile Otu moved to the Labour Party after he lost to Gershom Bassey.

After Gershom Bassey was declared winner of the election, Bassey Otu contested the result at the election tribunal, but the Cross River State Election Petition Tribunal dismissed the petition based on the ground of lack of merit.

The Tribunal Chairman, Justice Augustine Adeniyi who read the Tribunal’s three hours judgment said Prince Otu’s petition lacked merit on all the issues raised by Otu and accordingly dismissed the petition.

Senator Gershom Bassey is the current vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Upstream Petroleum.
