About Osisioma Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Osisioma local government area is situated in Abia state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Osisoma and the LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Uratta, Okpu-Umuobo, Amaitoli, Aro-ngwa, Amasa, Oso-okwa, Umunneise, and Okupu-umuobo. The current estimated population of Osisioma LGA is put at 169,802 inhabitants with the area primarily populated by members of the Ngwa sub-division of the Igbo ethnic group. The Ngwa dialect of the Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is extensively practiced in the area. Important festivals celebrated in Osisioma LGA include the Ikoro and Ekpe dance festivals while the prominent traditional rulers in the LGA include the Eze ndi Etiti Ohazu.


GEOGRAPHY OF OSISIOMA

Osisioma LGA occupies a total area of 198 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the area faling under the Tropical Savannah Climate.


ECONOMY OF OSISIOMA

Osisioma LGA has a vibrant Agricultural sector with the area known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as yam, maize, melon, and breadfruit. The LGA also has a vibrant trade sector and hosts a number of markets such as the Eke Akpaka market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important occupations of the people of Osisioma LGA include animal rearing, wood carving, and hunting.
