About Ukwa West Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ukwa west local government area is situated in Abia state, South-east geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Oke Ikpe and the LGA comprises of several towns and villages such as Owaza, Umuone, Uzuaku, Umuokwor, Umuahala, Oborhia, Aparazu, and Amaukwu. The estimated population of Ukwa west LGA is put at 158,432 inhabitants with the area primarily occupied by members of the Igbo ethnic affiliation. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is the most practiced in the area. Notable landmarks in Ukwa west LGA include the Obokwe district hospital and the Ukwa west mini stadium.

Ukwa west LGA covers a total area of 271 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade. The LGA hosts a number of rivers and streams with the average humidity level in the area put at 71 percent. The average wind speed in Ukwa west LGA is put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF UKWA WEST

Ukwa west LGA is rich in deposits of crude oil and natural gas with the area hosting a number of oil mining firms. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting the popular Obehie main market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic enterprises engaged in by the people of Ukwa west LGA include blacksmithing, wood carving, farming, and fishing.
