About Katagum Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Katagum local government area is situated in Bauchi state, North-east Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Azare. The LGA shares boundaries with the Zaki and Itas/Gadau LGAs and is a part of the Katagum Emirate. The towns and villages that make up Katagum LGA include Dugunde, Azare, Maisango, Chinade, Fatara, and Garin-Bakake. The population of  Katagum LGA is estimated at 204,732 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Hausa, Fulani, and the Gudurawa tribes. The Hausa language is one of the spoken languages in Katagum LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are widely practiced in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF KATAGUM

Katagum LGA covers a total area of 1436 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 32 degrees centigrade. The LGA lies on the banks of the Jama’are river and has an average humidity level of 30 percent. The average wind speed in Katagum LGA is put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF KATAGUM

Farming is a critical aspect of the economy of Katagum LGA with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as sorghum, millet, rice, cowpea, cotton, and groundnut. The LGA also has a boisterous trade sector and hosts a number of markets such as the        Maraban Liman market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities engaged in by the people of Katagum LGA include blacksmithing and hunting.
