About Irele Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Irele local government area is situated in Ondo state, Southwest Nigeria with its headquarters in the town of Ode-irele. Towns and villages that make up Irele LGA include Igbinsin, Ajagba, Akotogbo, Omi, Ode-irele, Iyasan, Labala, and Irelejare. The estimated population of Irele LGA is 194,761 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is extensively spoken in the LGA while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practiced religions in the LGA. A number of colourful and indigenous festivals are held in Irele LGA and these include the Ore and the Eminale festivals while important landmarks in the area include the famous Oju Malokun shrine. A number of prominent traditional rulers are found in Irele LGA and they include the Olofun of Ode-irele and the Laragunsin of Iyasan.


GEOGRAPHY OF IRELE

Irele LGA occupies a total area of 963 square kilometres and has an annual average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The average humidity level of the LGA is 66 percent while the total precipitation level of the area is estimated to be around 1,560 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF IRELE

Farming is a critical aspect of the economy of Irele LGA with a number of crops such as yam and pepper grown in the area. Trade also flourishes in the LGA as the area plays host to a number of markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Irele LGA include blacksmithing and hunting.
