About Ondo State

Ondo state is situated in the SouthWest geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has the city of Akure as its Capital. Ondo state shares borders with Ekiti, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Ogun and Osun states.

The Yoruba are the dominant tribe in Ondo state while prominent towns include Akoko, Owo, Okitipupa and Ilaje. Ondo state  has a total of 18 LGAs which include Akoko North-east, Akoko North-west, Akoko South-east, Akoko South-west, Akure North, Akure South, Ese odo, Idanre, Ifedore, Ilaje, Ile Oluji, Okeigbo, Irele, Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ondo east, Ondo west, Owo, and Ose with an estimated total population of 3,441,024 inhabitants. Islam, Christianity and paganism are the dominant religious inclinations in Ondo state. Tertiary Institutions in Ondo state include the Adekunle Ajasin University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Achievers University, University of Medical Sciences Ondo, Ondo state University of Science and Technology, Wesley University of Science and Technology, Elizade University and the Adeyemi College of Education Ondo. A number of health facilities are found in Ondo state and these include the Mother and Child Hospital Akure, Crow Hospital Akure, St John and Mary hospital Akure, Ondo state Specialist hospital , Federal Medical Center Owo, Paramount specialist Hospital Sabo, Midas hospital Akure and the Tender heart Specialist hospital Akure.

Popular festivals in Ondo state include the Ariginya and the Orosun festivals while important Landmarks within the state include the Green square, Palace of the Deji of Akure, Cave of Ashes Isarun, Igbokoda waterfront, Igbo Olodumare, Ebomi Lake Tourist Centre, Owo Museum of Antiques, Oke Maria hills, Araromi Beach, the Okomu National Park and the Idanre hills.

GEOGRAPHY OF ONDO STATE

Ondo state has a total area of 15,500 km squared with the distict seasons being the dry and the rainy seasons with average annual rainfall at 2600 mm and the average temperature at about 27 degrees centigrade.

Humidity is at 43 percent with the state comprising of several rivers and tributaries which include the Arun river, the Ipelu river and the Iporo river. 


ECONOMY OF ONDO STATE

Ondo state is both an agrarian and commercial state with crops such as cocoa, rice, vegetables and yam grown in appreciable quantities. 

Ondo state also has a number of Markets wher a host of commodities are bought and sold. These markets include the Mojere market, Shasha market, Amole market, Igbokoda modern market, Odopetu market Akure, Ibaka market Akungba, Oja Oba market Akure, Isinkan market, Oja Oshodi market, Emure market Owo, Ogbese market and the Owena market. 

Mineral resources found in Ondo state include Crude oil and natural gas, Quart sand, Clay, granite, limestone, talc, kaolin, coal, columbite, rock, tin, bitumen, and gemstones.

HISTORY OF ONDO STATE

Ondo state was created in February 1976 from the old western state. The state has since had a number of governors/ administrators who have at one time or the other piloted the affairs of the state. These include
