About Ikom Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ikom local government area is found in Cross River state, South-south geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. Ikom LGA is bordered by the Ogoja, Boki, Etung, and Obubra LGAs with the LGA comprising of a number of towns and villages such as Bisiri, Abakpa, Ukelle, Ukwel, Okuku, Udama Ubug, Akparabong, Abanyum, and Olulumo. The estimated population of Ikom LGA is 124,881 inhabitants with the area hosting members of different ethnic affiliations such as the Ejagham and the Yakum. The Ofutop Bakor, Yala, and Ejagham languages are spoken in the LGA while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. Notable landmarks in Ikom LGA include the Ikom Town Beach while popular festivals held in the area include the New Yam festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF IKOM

Ikom LGA occupies a total area of 1,861 square kilometres and has the Ikom River flowing through its territory. Ikom LGA has several monoliths in Alok and Nkarasi with the area’s average temperature at 25 degrees centigrade. The average humidity level of Ikom LGA is 81 percent while total precipitation in the area is put at 2900 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF IKOM

A number of mineral resources are found in Ikom LGA and these include limestone, Basalt, Baryte, and salt. Agriculture also flourishes in the LGA with crops such as cocoa, banana, plantain, cocoyam, and yam grown in substantially large quantities in the area. Ikom LGA is also a trade hub with the area hosting several markets such as the Ikom main market where a plethora of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Ikom LGA include fishing and lumbering.

Ikom LGA was created in the year 1976.
