About Yala Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Yala local government area is situated in Cross River state, South-south geopolitical division of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Okpama and the LGA shares boundaries with the Ikom, Obubra, and Ogoja LGAs and with parts of Benue and Ebonyi states. Yala LGA is made up of several towns and villages which include Ebo, Echumoga, Oloko, Ugaja, Ijegu, Yahe, Uchu, Echumofana, Wanikom, Oke, and Wonye. The estimated population of Yala LGA is put at 279,333 inhabitants with the area majorly occupied by members of the Yala ethnic sub-division. The Yala dialect is widely spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and traditionalism are commonly practiced in the area. Festivals held in Yala LGA include the NewYam festival while the notable landmarks in the area include the Okpama salt pond and the Lugard wall in Gabu.


GEOGRAPHY OF YALA

Yala LGA occupies a total area of 1,739 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The LGA has substantially large forest reserves and hosts several rivers, streams, and creeks. Yala LGA has an estimated wind speed of 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF YALA

Farming is a key economic activity in Yala LGA with crops such as yam, plantain, pineapple, and coconut grown in the area. The LGA also has large deposits of salt with the mining of the resource contributing to the economy of the area. Other important economic activities engaged in by the people of Yala LGA include fishing, trade, lumbering, and hunting.

HISTORY OF YALA

Yala LGA was created on the 27th of August in the year 1989.
