About Ogoja Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ogoja local government area is found in Cross River state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ogoja.  Ogoja LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Ishibori, Ekumtak, Oboso, Bansan, Idum, Ekajuk, Egbong, Nnang, and Bansara. The estimated population of Ogoja LGA is put at 188,703 inhabitants with the area mostly inhabited by members of diverse ethnic groups such as the Mbube and Ishibori. The Mbube and Ishibori dialects are spoken in Ogoja LGA while the religion of Christianity is commonly practiced in the area. A number of colourful festivals are held in Ogoja LGA and these include the New Yam festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF OGOJA

Ogoja LGA covers a total area of 972 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. A number of rivers and streams flow through the LGA with the area hosting large portions of forests. The average humidity level in Ogoja LGA is put at 74 percent.


ECONOMY OF OGOJA

Trade is an important economic activity in Ogoja LGA with the area playing host to several markets such as the popular Ogboja and Odajie markets. Fishing is also a key enterprise of the people of Ogoja LGA with the area’s water bodies being rich in seafood. Other important occupations undertaken by dwellers of Ogoja LGA include farming, lumbering and craftsmanship.
