About Nkanu East Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Nkanu East local government area is domiciled in Enugu state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Nkanu East LGA shares boundaries with parts of Ebonyi state. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Amagunze and the LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Ihuokpara, Mburubu, Oruku, Ugbakwa, Nkerefi, Akpawfu, Amaechi Idodo, Ubahu and Owoh. The estimated population of Nkanu East LGA is put at 169,703 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is widely spoken in Nkanu East LGA while the religion of Christianity is commonly practiced in the area. Prominent traditional rulers in Nkanu East LGA include the Eze Agabi of Ihuokpara kingdom while notable festivals held in the LGA include the Ani onwa ano and Oruku festivals.


GEOGRAPHY OF NKANU EAST

Nkanu East LGA covers a total area of 795 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA hosts the popular Amagunze lakes which are found in the Amagunze tourist Complex. Nkanu East LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with average wind speed in the area put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF NKANU EAST

Farming is an important aspect of the economy of Nkanu East LGA with crops such as oil palm, cassava, yam, and vegetables grown in the area. Trade also blossoms in Nkanu East LGA with the LGA hosting several markets which include the Ugbawka main market. Other important economic activities of the people of Nkanu East LGA include palm wine tapping and wood work.
