About Nkanu West Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Nkanu west local government area is situated in Enugu state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Agbani. The towns and villages that make up Nkanu west LGA include Akpugo, Akegbe Ugwu, Ozalla, Umueze, Amuri, Obuoffia, Obe, and Amodu. The estimated population of Nkanu west LGA is put at 188,904 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace constituted by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in Nkanu west while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Popular festivals celebrated in Nkanu west LGA include the New Yam festival while notable landmarks in the area include the Enugu State University of Science and Technology and the ESUT Law School.


GEOGRAPHY OF NKANU WEST

Nkanu west LGA covers a total area of 255 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. Nkanu west LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with average wind speed in the area put at 10 km/h. The Ani Ozalla lake is also a key geographical feature of the area.


ECONOMY OF NKANU WEST

Nkanu west LGA hosts a number of hotels, banks, industries, as well as a number of government and privately owned institutions. The LGA is also popular for the cultivation of a number of crops such as oil palm, cassava, yam, and cocoyam. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting several markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold.
