About Khana Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Khana local government area is in Rivers state, South-south Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Bori. A number of towns and villages make up Khana LGA and these include Nyokhana, Kenkhana, Babbe, Opuoko, Buan, Zaakpon, and Sogho. The estimated population of Khana LGA is put at 239,874 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Ogoni ethnic group. The Ogoni language is predominantly spoken in the LGA while the most practiced religion in the area is Christianity. A number of festivals such as the Ogoni cultural festival are held in Khana LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF KHANA

Khana LGA covers a total area of 560 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The area has several rivers and tributaries flowing within its territory. The total precipitation in Khana LGA is estimated at 2900 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF KHANA

Trade is an important feature of the economy of Khana LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Bori Central market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Fishing is also an important economic activity undertaken by members of the Khana LGA with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in sea food. Farming is another critical aspect of the economy of Khana LGA with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as cassava, maize, oil palm, and plantain.
