About Girei Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Girei local government area is found in Adamawa state which is domiciled in the Northeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The towns and villages that make up Girei LGA include Greng, Ntabo, Labondo, Koh, Demsare, Tabongo, Fawure, and Noyine. The estimated population of Girei LGA is 149,738 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Bwatiye and Fulani ethnic affiliations. The Fufulde and Bwatiye languages are widely spoken in Girei LGA while Christianity and Islam are the most practiced religions in the area. Notable landmarks in Girei LGA include the Radio Gotel.


GEOGRAPHY OF GIREI

Girei LGA lies on the Benue river and has an average temperature of 33 degrees centigrade. The average humidity level of the LGA is 24 percent while the average wind speed in the area is 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF GIREI

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Girei LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a wide variety of food and cash crops. Also, animals such as camels, cows, and horses are reared in Girei LGA. The area also hosts a number of markets where the inhabitants of the LGA and surrounding areas come to exchange a variety of goods and services. In recent times however, the economy of Girei LGA has been badly affected by incidents of unrest in the area. From the activities of members of the Boko Haram sect to those of cattle rustlers and herdsmen who frequently clash with farmers; these have resulted in loss of lives and property and has greatly affected the business life and economy of the area.
