About Mayo - Belwa Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Mayo Belwa local government area is in Adamawa state, North-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The LGA is a part of the Adamawa Emirate and is made up of several towns and villages such as Bajama, Bunyayi, Gorobi, Wakka, Ubaka, Binyeri, Mayo Lamja, and Mayo Farang. The estimated population of Mayo Belwa LGA is put at 212,534 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being the members of the Chamba ethnic group. The Teme language is widely spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF MAYO - BELWA

Mayo Belwa LGA covers a total area of 1,768 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 32 degrees centigrade. The Mayo Belwa River flows through the LGA and has an average humidity level of 37 percent. The area witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons while the average wind speed in the area is put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF MAYO - BELWA

Mayo Belwa LGA is an agricultural hub with the area known for the cultivation of a variety of crops such as sorghum and soyabeans. The LGA is also a hub for the rearing and sales of a variety of domestic animals such as cows and camels. Other important economic activities engaged in by people of Mayo Belwa LGA include trade, hunting, blacksmithing, fishing, and craftsmanship.
