Chanchaga

Chanchaga local government area is located in Niger State, Northcentral Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Minna. Chanchaga comprises several towns and villages which include Bako, Kangwa, Nagun, Zakwogi, Pette, Shana, Kuka, and Babeji. The population of Chanchaga LGA is put at 138,434 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Nupe and Gbagyi tribes. The commonly practiced religions in Chanchaga LGA are Christianity and Islam while the Nupe and Gbagyi languages are widely spoken in the area. Chanchaga LGA is home to a number of prominent festivals which include the Gani cultural festival and the Tsayimafhuui festival.

GEOGRAPHY OF CHANCHAGA

Chanchaga is one of the smallest LGAs in Niger state covering a total area of just 72 square kilometres. The average temperature of the area is put at 30 degrees centigrade while the humidity level in Chanchaga averages 41 percent.

ECONOMY OF CHANCHAGA

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Chanchaga LGA with a wide variety of crops such as Yam, millet, beans and sorghum grown in the area. Other important economic engagements of the people of Chanchaga LGA include hunting, pottery and trade with the area hosting several markets such as the Railway market, the Gwadebe market, and the Gwari market.

Chanchaga local government area was created in the year 1987 from the Minna Municipal council.
