About Obafemi/owode Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Obafemi Owode local government area is domiciled in Ogun state, South-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Owode Egba. Obafemi Owode shares boundaries with the Odeda, Sagamu Ikenne, and Ifo LGAs and with parts of Lagos and Oyo states. Towns and villages that make up Obafemi Owode LGA include Adigbe, Kobafe, Ajebo, Owode, Iro,Makoloko, Oba, and Obafemi. The estimated population of Obafemi Owode LGA is put at 194,813 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Egba sub-division of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Egba dialect of the Yoruba language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area.  Festivals celebrated in Obafemi Owode LGA include the Egungun festival.

Obafemi Owode LGA occupies a total area of 1410 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA is well forested and has an average humidity level of 56 percent.


ECONOMY OF OBAFEMI/OWODE

Obafemi Owode LGA has a rich agricultural heritage and is known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as Rice, kolanut, maize, cassava, and cocoa. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting several markets which include the Ogunmakin and Ibafo markets which attract thousands of buyers and sellers of different commodities.

HISTORY OF OBAFEMI/OWODE

Obafemi Owode LGA was created in the year 1976 as a result of the Local Government Reforms.
