About Tarmuwa Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Tarmuwa local government area is situated in Yobe state, North-east Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Babangida. The LGA is bordered by Bursari, Jakusko, Damaturu, Potiskum, and Nangere LGAs. Towns and villages that make up Tarmuwa LGA include Babangida, Jajere, Mashio, Zogoto, Mafa, Sungul, Koka, and Konyel. The current estimated population of Tarmuwa LGA is put at 212,844 inhabitants with the area mostly populated by members of the Kanuri, Hausa, and the Fulani ethnic groups. The Kanuri language is one of the spoken languages in Tarmuwa LGA while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the area. Tarmuwa LGA also hosts the Jajere Emirate.


GEOGRAPHY OF TARMUWA

Tarmuwa LGA sits on a total area of 4,594 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 34 degrees centigrade. The LGA’s landscape features long stretches of dry and sandy flat lands with sparse vegetation. Average wind speed in Tarmuwa LGA is put at 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF TARMUWA

Trade is an important feature in the economy of Tarmuwa LGA and the area hosts a number of markets which include the popular Mafa market which attracts several buyers and sellers of diverse commodities. A number of animals such as camels, donkeys, and rams are also reared and sold in Tarmuwa LGA. Other important economic activities that take place in Tarmuwa LGA include pottery, the weaving of mats and baskets, and blacksmithing.

Tarmuwa LGA was created in the year 1992.
